Lilash & Prostaglandin use continued....

I just came across an article from December 2008 stating that Allergan has an eyelash growth product called Latisse that was approved by the FDA. It contains Bimatoprost which is a synthetic prostaglandin as I have mentioned in a previous entry. ClinicalTrials.gov says that it was completed in 2007 and that enrollment was 278. I will try to find the published study results and list the results and side effects.

Eyelash Growth Research Study Shows Prostaglandins Increase Eyelash length

I found another eyelash growth research study on ClinicalTrials.gov done at the University of Miami. The objective of this study was to measure determine if Lumigan (bimatoprost, a type of synthetic prostaglandin) causes increased lash length when used in gel suspension applied to the base of the eyelashes. This study excluded patients with a history of glaucoma or alopecia (condition that causese hair loss), meaning they were normal subjects. The results reported say that lumigan caused about a 1mm increase in eyelash length over the control eye.

STUDY TITLE:

Eyelash Growth From Application of Bimatoprost in Gel Suspension to the Base of the Eyelashes

OBJECTIVE:

To determine if Lumigan (bimatoprost) causes increased lash length when used in gel suspension applied to the base of the eyelashes.

Methods: Subjects recruited from the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute were screened and those who met inclusion criteria were enrolled. Each participant received two vials of gel suspension, which contained bimatoprost and normal saline, respectively, each mixed 1:1 with GonakTM gel and labeled "right eye" and "left eye" according to randomization. The suspension was applied to the eyelashes every evening on the designated eye for 6 weeks. Lash length was measured with a caliper at enrollment, at weekly intervals during the study and at 1 and 3 months after study completion. Visual acuity, ocular symptoms, intraocular pressure and photographs were documented at these same intervals.

RESULTS:

The average eyelash growth in the Lumigan group was 2.01mm (vs. control average of 1.13mm) which was a statistically significant difference (p=0.009)

Study Shows that Prostaglandins Increase Eyelash Growth

Lilash contains a type of prostaglandin so I did a PubMed search for clinical trials measuring eyelash growth due to prostaglandins application.

PURPOSE: To compare the eyelash lengthening effect of latanoprost in adults and children with glaucoma. METHODS: Twenty eyes of 13 men and 7 women (mean age: 54.9, range 42-69 years) with primary open-angle glaucoma and 20 eyes of 9 boys and 11 girls (mean age: 10.7, range 6-16 years) with glaucoma were included in this prospective study. In 19 children, juvenile glaucoma and in one, pseudophakic glaucoma had been detected. A single eyelash was pulled from the center of the upper eyelid before latanoprost therapy and at the sixth month of therapy, and measured. RESULTS: In adult cases, the mean eyelash length was 5.79+/-0.18 mm (5.5-6.1 mm) at baseline and 6.45+/-0.21 mm (6.2-6.8 mm) at the sixth month. In children, the mean length was 5.66+/-0.22 mm (5.3-6.0 mm) at baseline and 6.39+/-0.37 mm (5.9-6.9 mm) at the sixth month. The mean difference in eyelash lengths at baseline and the sixth month was 0.67+/-0.09 mm (0.5-0.7 mm) in adults and 0.75+/-0.25 mm (0.4-1.2 mm) in children. CONCLUSIONS: The differences in mean eyelash lengths at baseline and at the sixth month of latanoprost therapy were statistically significant in both adults and children (p=0.000). The mean of the difference of the eyelash length in children was higher than in adults but the result was not statistically significant (p=0.678).

Review: Lilash Eyelash Growth Stimulator Review

My first review will be of Lilash because I bought Lilash three weeks ago on Ebay after reading many positive reviews about the product. It was expensive, but I went for it anyways. My curiousity go the best of me. Some people have written that their eyes were sensitive to the product, which made me hesitant to buy it at first. However, I decided that i could always rinse it out of my eyes if it started to irritate them. I have now been using it for three weeks and I have yet to have any eye irritation to the product. I took a picture before I started using Lilash to use as a basis for comparison. Here is that picture. I will post monthly updates as well so that you can see the results I'm getting. So far, I have not seen dramatic results, but it has only been three weeks. I apply it every night before going to bed.

Eyelash growth has was documented as a side effect of glaucoma treatments containing prostaglandins. So beauty companies began putting prostaglandin analogs in their eyelash growth stimulating products. PROCEDURE:

I apply Lilash along the upper and lower lash line like liquid eyeliner every night before bed.

RESULTS:

The company claims that results can be seen in 4-8 weeks so I will begin posting pictures at week 4.

I will post week 1 pictures at the same time as week 4. There is nothing interesting about seeing my original eyelash length until there are results to compare it against, right?
